Current Gloriavale resident defends leader, who is her grandfather in Employment Court hearing

A current member of Gloriavale has defended its leader, who is also her grandfather.

Joanna Courage hit back at allegations made about Howard Temple while giving evidence at an employment court case in Christchurch. The case is examining the role of women working in the community.

"Howard is well-respected. He does not have a reputation in the community for acting inappropriately in the community," Courage said.

At times overcome by emotion, the 23-year-old gave evidence for Gloriavale, fighting a case brought by six former residents who say they were born into servitude.

"The men in our community are a blessing and do everything they can to make sure we have what we need and that the work isn't overwhelming."

The nature of that work is what the employment court is exploring.

Court Counsel Robert Kirkness probed Gloriavale resident Compassion Standtrue about her interaction with the world outside.

"What places outside have you been in for more than 24 hours continuously?" he asked.

"Christchurch," Standtrue replied.

"How many times?"

"Once," she said.

While she is in court for this case, Kirkness also explored access to information.

"Are you aware of the different politicians, etc?"

"Vaguely," she responded.

"Are you aware there are two parties that are larger than the others?"

"Yes," she said.

"Do you know what they are?"

"One of them is Labour, and I can't remember the other one," she responded.

Standtrue said she enjoys the work at Gloriavale - there isn't anything else she'd rather do.
