A diver who went missing in Wellington has been found dead by police.
A search was sparked after the diver was reported missing at around 6pm Monday in the Karaka Bays area after they did not return from a free dive.
An extensive air and water search was carried out involving the Maritime Unit and Police National Dive Squad, Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving and a helicopter.
The diver was sadly located deceased shortly before 8am on Tuesday, a police spokesperson said.
Police are working to support the diver’s family and the death will be referred to the Coroner.
