A person has been hospitalised after a strong chemical smell was reported at the Port of Tauranga on Tuesday morning.
A Port of Tauranga spokesperson told Newshub emergency services were called to the port following reports of a "strong" chemical smell at the southern end of the Mount Maunganui wharves,
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) told Newshub it was alerted to the chemical smell at 2:40am.
The spokesperson said three workers reported feeling sick and nearby work areas were temporarily evacuated. One person was taken to hospital as a precaution.
"The smell has now dissipated and operations have returned to normal," the spokesperson said Bay of Plenty Regional Council officers are investigating and at this stage, there is no obvious port-related source of the smell, the spokesperson said.
FENZ said it's working with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council's pollution team and port staff to ascertain the cause of the smell.
