Blackcaps opening batsman Martin Guptill has been ruled out of Friday's Twenty20 and the first two ODIs against South Africa due to a hamstring injury.
The 30-year-old injured his right hamstring on Tuesday during practice. The injury is separate from the one which ruled him out of the third Chappell-Hadlee trophy match against Australia earlier in the month.
Guptill has been replaced by 20-year old Glenn Phillips from the Auckland Aces in the T20 squad while Dean Brownlie comes into the ODI squad for the first two matches against the Proteas.
Blackcaps selector Gavin Larson says Phillips has been called into the squad based on his recent form for the Aces.
"He bats with power; has shown he can clear the rope, and gets a deserved opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage," said Larson.
"Glenn will play as a specialist batsman only, with Luke still taking the gloves. Playing in his home city, it will certainly be a big occasion for Glenn."
The one-off T20 match will take place at Eden Park in Auckland this Friday while the first ODI will be on Sunday in Hamilton.
