Former All Black superstar Dan Carter is back in New Zealand following his run-in with the law in Paris on Thursday morning [NZ time].

He's posted an image with a view of New Zealand native bush, saying: "Just got back to NZ for what was supposed to be a fun pre planned holiday. Seeing the family again puts fresh perspective on just how big a mistake I made. #dontdrinkanddrive"

Carter was nabbed by French police drink driving. It's been reported the Racing 92 star was almost twice the legal limit when stopped for speeding near the Champs-Elysees, testing 0.98g/litre of blood. The legal limit is 0.5g/litre.

"I am sure a lot of you have seen the headlines," the 34-year-old said in a social media statement on Friday [NZ time].

"No excuses - I made a massive error of judgement and have let down my club, my fans and most importantly my family."
