Forward Kosta Barbarouses has been granted a release from his contract with the Wellington Phoenix, the club announced Monday morning.

Barbarouses has only been with the club for one season after joining on a two-year deal from the Melbourne Victory.

But the exciting attacker approached the Phoenix management asking for a release for "reasons not pertaining to football".

The club has described it as a difficult 12 months off the field for Barbarouses.

"It's not a decision we have made lightly," said Dome in a joint statement.

"Especially after the back end to the season that Kosta had."

Barbarouses joins a host of players that have left the Phoenix following the 2016/17 season including notables veteran Glen Moss and Roly Bonevacia respectively.

The 27-year-old fell out of favour with the All Whites selectors earlier this season, omitted from the squad for the World Cup qualifiers with Fiji.

However, he finished the season strong for the Phoenix and was rewarded with selection for the All Whites' friendly against Northern Ireland last weekend.

After showing some good form and hitting the post in that friendly, Barbarouses is strongly tipped to make the All Whites squad for the Confederations Cup in Russia which kicks off later this month.

The Phoenix say Barbarouses hasn't yet spoken with any other clubs with no new deal on the table.
