Kiwi heavyweight amateur boxer David Nyika loses controversial quarter-final at world championships

New Zealand heavyweight David Nyika has been robbed in his quarter-final against Olympic champion Evgeny Tishchenko at the world boxing championships in Hamburg.

The commentators thought the 22-year-old deserved to win the points decision against Tishchenko, but four of the five judges awarded the fight to the Russian.

Nyika looked devastated, and took to social media to vent his frustration.

"Today I put on a clinic against reigning Olympic and World Champion. I feel like I'm the punch line of some sick practical joke in this sport. Nevertheless I'm still here, and remain loyal to my craft," Nyika said in a Facebook post after the fight.

Nyika was the lone Kiwi competing at the AIBA tournament.

The only New Zealander to have won a world championship boxing medal was David Tua, who took bronze in 1991.
