Former would number five Sara Errani has been banned for two months after testing positive for a banned substance.
The 30-year-old tested positive for the banned drug letrozole, a drug which is associated with female body builders as it can increase body mass.
Errani's mother had been using the drug as part of her breast cancer treatment.
The Italian argued that some of the letrozole pills, which were kept in the kitchen might have contaminated foods which she had consumed.
Errani's mother and father told the tribunal hearing in July that after the positive finding, they carried out multiple experiments which found the drug dissolved in a broth, along with a meat mixture for tortellini.
An independent tribunal set up by the International Tennis Federation accepted Errani's explanation that she must have accidentally ingested drugs due to contamination but they felt a suspension was still necessary as Errani could have done more to prevent this happening.
The current world number 98 was extremely upset at the final outcome.
"I never took, in my life and during my career, any prohibited substance," Errani said in a statement. "I am extremely disappointed but at the same time at peace with my conscience and aware I haven't done anything wrong."
The former French Open finalist has won nine singles titles and 25 doubles titles in her WTA career, along with helping Italy to three Fed Cup titles.
She will be free to compete again on October 3.
