National head coach Jerry Olszewski parts ways with Swimming New Zealand

Swimming New Zealand's national coach Jerry Olszewski has resigned after just one year in the position.

The national body confirmed Olszewski's resignation to Newshub, citing his desire to return to the USA for family reasons. He becomes the seventh coach in as many years to have come and gone.

"This has not been an easy decision for Jerry but we respect his decision and he leaves with our full support and best wishes," said CEO Steve Johns.

The American is a veteran of the US club system and has over 25 years experience coaching at elite level.

It leaves the team in a precarious situation with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April fast-approaching.

Personal reasons aside, it's understood Olszewski was at odds with Swimming NZ's over their Olympic strategy and the perceived discrepancy between his job description and his actual role.

The New Zealand team fell well short of their targets in Rio last year, managing a best place finish of just ninth after initial goals of a one medal and five finalists.

Olszewski's assistant Matt Woose will step in to take charge on an interim basis.
