Engine problems have hampered Brendon Hartley during the opening two practice session ahead of this weekend's Mexican Grand Prix.
The Toro Rosso diver was 18th during the first practice session, but only completed 10 laps after his engine stopped and was forced into the pits and missed the remainder of the session.
He recorded a time of 1m 21.74s, nearly four seconds slower than Valtteri Bottas, who had the fastest time of 1m 17.824s.
But things improved during the second practice session for Hartley who finished 13th with a time of 1m 19.423s, 1.622 seconds behind Australian Daniel Ricciardo.
However, he still complained of hearing strange noises coming from the engine and brought the car back to the pits with five minutes remaining.
Meanwhile Hartley's teammate Pierre Gasly did not participate much during the second session due to engine problems and as a result finished 19th after not taking part in the first.
Hartley is preparing for his second Formula 1 race after making his debut last weekend during the US Grand Prix.
There is an additional practice session on Sunday morning before qualifying begins 7am (NZ time).
