Rugby League World Cup: Jason Taumalolo unsure about international future

  • 26/11/2017

Tongan forward Jason Taumalolo is unsure what his international future holds after Tonga's 20-18 loss to England in the Rugby League World Cup semi-final.

Taumalolo made headlines before the World Cup after pledging his allegiance to Tonga, despite having played for the Kiwis earlier in the year.

The 24-year-old was one of a number of high-profile players to pledge his allegiance to Tonga, including David Fusitu'a and Australian prop Andrew Fifita.

Speaking to media after the match, Taumalolo was unable to confirm which country he'd choose to represent next season."

"Time will tell, I can't answer that now," Taumalolo said.

"I'm not too sure about my international career at the moment. It's back to pre-season for me and we'll see how we go."

"[It's] never for money. At the moment I'm all about enjoying my football and that's what I've done through this tournament.

"I got to experience it with a great group of boys that are proud Tongans and that's all I ever asked for."

Tonga trailed 20-0 in the final 10 minutes before Tonga launched a big comeback which set up a thrilling finish.

Fifita crossed the line for what looked like a match-winning try, but referee Matt Cecchin believed Fifita knocked it on and blew his whistle to end the match.

Tonga coach Kristian Woolf was furious at Cecchin and believes he should have at least gone to the video referee, and Taumalolo agrees.

"I would have thought at least check it. Obviously, last play of the game and he crosses the game at least check to see if it was a possible try or not but that is footy at the end of the day."
