Midget driver Hayden Williams will be counting his lucky stars after walking away injury-free from a spectacular crash at Western Springs Raceway on Tuesday night.
Racing in the opening Test of the tri-series between New Zealand, Australia and USA, Williams caught the wheel of another competitor's car at the rear of the field in the opening moments of the contest.
The Kiwi was sent spinning dangerously close to the top of the safety fence before crashing back to earth upside-down, forcing a red flag to temporarily halt proceedings while repairs were made to the damaged fencing.
"The body's a little bit sore but we'll get this thing fixed up and go again," said Williams after the incident.
"Not quite sure what happened. I think everyone just backed up in front of me and someone moved a litte bit right and I wasn't expecting it."
The contest never recommenced after a sudden downpour put a premature end to the night's racing.
New Zealand was awarded victory on the strength of the run of heat three winner Brock Maskovich.
