Kiwi Lydia Ko is trying to keep her emotions in check as she is within touching distance of winning her first LPGA title since July 2016.

The 21-year-old as a one-shot lead at 11-under after an impressive five-under round of 67 during the third round on Sunday at the Lake Merced Golf Club in California.

Ko has two previous victories at Lake Merced, in 2014 and 2015, among her 14 LPGA Tour wins.

She is trying to keep calm as she eyes her first title in nearly two years.

"I guess if it happens, I'm sure I'll be super excited. Who knows? It might be tomorrow, it might be the next week, might be in the year, who knows?

"I know that no matter what number win it is, it's always exciting to be the one holding the trophy.

"I think it would be emotional and exciting for not only me, but for my whole family."

Ko said she feels comfortable playing at one of her favourite courses.

"I love San Francisco, and I'm a member here, so sometimes I get some friendly member bounces. But it brings back a lot of good memories for me.

"Coming into the week, I knew that no matter how I was going to play, I knew I was going to have a great time. The members here and all the fans have been super supportive."

Ko will begin her final round at 8:50 am (NZ time).
