Super Rugby: Chiefs coach Colin Cooper wary of surging Jaguares

Chiefs coach Colin Cooper isn't under-estimating the threat posed by the streaking Jaguares ahead of their showdown in Rotorua on Friday.

The Argentinians have won three straight and are fresh off a ground-breaking win over the Blues in Auckland, the franchise's first-ever on New Zealand soil.

Cooper puts the improvement down to an adjustment in their approach to the game, where he believes they're striking a more effective balance between their traditional strengths, and a willingness to play an open and attacking brand of rugby.

"They have been in the competition for a while now and are used to the travel, and I reckon they have changed their style," Cooper told media before Monday's training.

"They used to throw it around too much, but they are not doing that so much - they are using their strengths at their set-piece, but still have the ability to attack.

"Their backline is full of dangerous players, so we will be talking hard about our defence.

"They are big men, their set-piece is good and they launch off their feet a bit, but right now they are playing good rugby."

The Chiefs are well-rested coming off a bye, but Cooper has insinuated that he could still look to rest his senior All Blacks in anticipation of the arduous journey to South Africa the following week.

"We have to manage Brodie [Retallick], Sam [Cane], Anton [Lienert-Brown] and Damian [McKenzie]. We are having those talks all the time.

"We have a number of players coming back now, but we still need to speak to the medical team about concussions."

One such player is livewire Damian McKenzie, who's itching to get back on the paddock after a series of injuries that have limited his impact in recent rounds.

"Over the past three or four games, I've had two games where I've only lasted 20 minutes, so it'd be nice to try to get a full game in this weekend," said the 23-year-old.

The Hamilton-based side are currently sitting fourth in the New Zealand conference cauldron, with six wins and two losses from their eight contests to date.

According to McKenzie, the devil remains in the details as the team looks to make its playoff push.

"It's just nailing the little things, especially in the latter half of the season.

"We've done some really good stuff up to now - we've got a big few weeks coming up."
