Formula 1: Brendon Hartley finishes 12th at Spanish Grand Prix

Brendon Hartley has recovered from his massive crash in practice to finish the Spanish Grand Prix in 12th on Monday morning (NZ time).

The Kiwi started the race in last place after he faced to take part in qualifying following a horrific crash in the third practice session, which saw his car split into two.

Hartley did well to navigate his car around the track and get across the line, unlike his teammate Pierre Gasly who crashed out of the race on the first lap.

However as he crossed the finish line, Hartley's car gave out on him and he is now facing a potential grid penalty for the Monaco GP in two weeks' time.

"I had a clean start and made up a few positions on the first lap," Hartley said after the race.

"The mechanics did an amazing job to get the car ready for today - it was actually finished last night - we just had to do the car setup this morning.

"We decided to pit under the first safety car and go straight on to the medium to effectively do a one-stop. It worked, but it meant we lost a lot a couple of positions in the beginning.

"It was difficult to overtake today; I think some of the cars around us had a bit more top speed which made life difficult.

"I had a good overtake on Marcus at the end to get 12th, and if I had made the overtake a little bit earlier there would have been the chance for 11th as well, because the pace was definitely there at the end of the race."

The race was won by Lewis Hamilton, who now extends his Formula 1 lead over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel to 17 points.

The victory, from pole position in a race that stayed dry despite the threat of rain, was Hamilton's second of the season, 64th of his career and third at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Hamilton now has 95 points to Vettel's 78 after five rounds of the 21-race championship.
