Rugby: Israel Folau tweets video featuring strong homophobic sentiment

Australian rugby star Israel Folau has returned to social media to reinforce his Christian beliefs, including his condemnation of gay people.

Folau tweeted a link to an 11-minute video from late American evangelist David Wilkerson named "It's time to get right with God." The video alludes to homosexuality and refers to "tolerance" as a scourge of modern-day society.

"With great love I wanted to share this video in the hope that people watch it and think about it. Jesus is coming back soon and he wants us to turn to him through repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38) please don't harden your heart," Folau posted in a tweet on Tuesday.

In the video Wilkerson derides contemporary society's acceptance of homosexuality, saying: "It's time to get right with God as Jesus is coming very soon. He's at the door."

The Wallabies fullback set off a media storm last month when he expressed his opinion that gay people were destined for hell, creating an intense public backlash.

Folau subsequently wrote a piece for Players Voice expressing his willingness to walk away from the game if deemed necessary by Rugby Australia. He ultimately escaped any punishment, with CEO Raelene Castle ruling that "he did not intend to upset people intentionally or bring hurt to the game."

All Blacks TJ Perenara and Brad Weber took to twitter themselves to denounce Folau's comments, and today's actions have set off a number of mixed reactions from the public.

Folau, who recently wed Silver Ferns star Maria Tutaia, was in the news for other reasons on Tuesday, with speculation that a high-profile shift to the Queensland Reds could be on the cards after conducting extensive talks with coach Brad Thorn.
