The Black Ferns have come back to win a thriller against Fiji and top their pool at the IRB Canada Sevens at Langford, British Columbia.

After defeating England 22-0 and Brazil 51-0 earlier on the opening day, the New Zealand women found themselves trailing their Pacific rivals 7-0 early, but battled back with tries to Niall Williams and Michaela Blyde for a 12-7 victory.

"Fiji is always one of those teams that are very unpredictable," said Blyde. "We analyse them all the time, but we're still not physically and mentally ready for what they come out with.

"We're really happy with our day today and definitely good momentum for tomorrow.

"We were on defence for two-plus minutes at times. It can get you physically and mentally, and sometimes you just want to fall on the ground, but we stayed on our feet and stayed positive and that's what got us the wins today."

The Ferns join France and Australia as pool winners, and now face England again in tomorrow's quarter-finals.

"We're quite lucky that we got to play them today, so we have a fairly good idea of what they're going to bring out," said Blyde. "But it's finals day and that's the most important day of the tournament.

"They could be completely different tomorrow."

Series leaders Australia take on Fiji, France have drawn Ireland and the United States meet Canada at the next stage.

Commonwealth Games gold medallists New Zealand won the last event at Kitakyushu, Japan, last month and also took out the Canadian event last year. They currently trail the Aussies by six points on overall standings.
