A new study has found that Air New Zealand is the most expensive of all the airlines that most commonly fly into Aotearoa.

The research was conducted by travel booking site Rome to Rio, which sought to reveal the average price of airline airfares per kilometre.

Air New Zealand was found to cost NZ$0.56/km, while JetStar came in second with NZ$0.34/km.

The study found Qantas charges NZ$0.21/km, while Emirates was shown to cost NZ$0.15/km.

The title of cheapest domestic airline in the world went to Australia's Tiger Air - however, a quick Google search of that name shows they're not exactly Australian travellers' favourite. Tiger Air was found to cost just NZ$0.08/km. The airline's frequent short-haul schedule will have helped it achieve this.

Traveller's flying around Asia are spoiled for choice, with AirAsiaX, Air India Express and Indonesia AirAsia coming in at first, second and third on the list for international airlines.

The Rome to Rio study also found that the average cost across all airlines researched had risen from NZ$0.25/km to NZ$0.27/km.
