Paddock was a 64-year-old multi-millionaire real estate investor.
He lived in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, a small city about 130km northeast of Las Vegas.
He was a former accountant and avid gambler, but had no criminal record besides a traffic violation.
Paddock's brother Eric said he was "dumbfounded" after his brother was named as the shooter, and said there was no indication of what was to come.
"He was just a guy," he told reporters. "Something happened, he snapped or something."
It has been revealed Paddock's father was once on the FBI's ten most wanted list.
Patrick Benjamin Paddock was known as a violent bank robber in the 1960s and 1970s.
A FBI poster reports the older Paddock to be "diagnosed as psychopathic".
