Dating a doll may not be everyone's first choice, but an engineer from the US says he would have a hard time choosing between his doll and his wife
Fifty-eight-year-old James explained to the Channel 4 Documentary The Sex Robots are Coming he started a sexual relationship with a sex doll, called April, after his wife was unavailable due to caring for her sick mother.
He admits to having sex with the doll four times a week and even takes her on dinner dates while remaining married to his wife Tine.
Tine was originally uncomfortable with the relationship, but eventually came around to understanding her husband's new partner.
"If he really wanted to he could have gone out and found someone else but he didn't do that, he was true to me," she said.
Meanwhile James says he would have a hard time choosing between his wife and the doll if he was forced to.
"If I had to choose between April and my wife I honestly don't know what I would do," he said.
James says the attraction comes from caring for April, dressing her and putting on make-up to suit his tastes
While the sexual attraction is only a small part of the equation, apparently that part of his relationship with April is not unlike the real thing.
"It's amazingly like having sex with a real woman, the biggest difference is whatever position you want them in you have to put them in, as they will not get there on their own," he said.
James is holding out for a new kind of sex robot to hit the market soon, as The Real Doll Company develops a robot with artificial intelligence.
She's due to hit the market in a few months and will cost £8000 (NZ$15,443).
