The Toronto passenger was charged CA$18,518.50 (NZ$20,768.55) for his eight-kilometre journey, which should have cost him about $14.
A woman claiming to be a friend of the man posted a screenshot of his Uber fare to Twitter on December 10.
She said Uber was "sticking" to the charge, but an Uber spokesperson told Slate that a full refund had been issued.
"There was an error here and it has been resolved," they said. "We have provided a full refund to this rider and apologised to him for this experience.
"We have safeguards in place to help prevent something like this from happening and we are working to understand how this occurred."
