A number of train routes in Auckland have been delayed or cancelled after a tsunami struck off the east coast of the North Island in the early hours of Friday morning.
A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck 130km from Te Araroa at about 4:37am, and has been followed by a smattering of aftershocks.
Civil Defence has since issued a tsunami warning, prompting Auckland Transport to cancel a number of journeys as they carry out checks on the tracks.
They say despite the warning, flooding of coastal areas is not expected.
Civil Defence announced just before 8am that there was no longer a tsunami threat to Auckland, though strong currents were expected on the east coast.
Train trips to and from the central city district of Britomart have now been given the green light, though further delays are still expected as they work to get journeys back on schedule.
The Onehunga train line has been completely suspended, while trips along the Southern and Western lines are coming to an end at the Newmarket stop.
Auckland Transport says the Eastern line is operating as normal between Manukau and Panmure.
Auckland Council is working to get the routes back up and running as soon as possible.
An Auckland Transport spokesman said there would be no impact on ferry trips. Buses in the city are also operating on schedule.
