Firefighters are battling a large warehouse fire at Te Atatu in west Auckland, describing it as an "all night operation".
Thirteen fire crews are working to dampen down the blaze, described as 60 metres by 100 metres in size.
Witness Matt McMullien-Dyer was near the fire on Mcleod Rd and said he heard explosions coming from a plume of dark smoke.
"It sounded like fireworks going off," he said. "There were little pops and crackles going, and there was quite thick, black smoke, and it was heading in the direction of the city."
The fire service says there's concern the warehouse contains gas cylinders and the roof may contain asbestos.
