Roads between Hanmer and Culverden on the South Island were badly cracked during Monday morning’s major earthquake.
Footage taken by Newshub reveals the extent of the damage to roads north of Christchurch, foreshadowing a massive repair bill for the nation in the aftermath of the 7.5-magnitude quake.
In some places the fissures are so wide that road cones have fallen inside them.
Across New Zealand there are reports of damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges and ferry terminals.
The extent of the damage will become clearer as the sun rises on what will be a challenging day for New Zealand’s emergency services.
