Protesters against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal have disrupted the opening day of a roadshow designed to sell the international trade agreement to the public.
A number of protesters gathered outside an event at Auckland's Rendezvous Hotel this morning, while inside a number of people disturbed proceedings as chief trade negotiator David Walker spoke.
The campaigners were removed from the event by security and escorted outside.
This morning Mr McClay told the Paul Henry programme that he was expecting demonstrations, but also encouraged those opposed to the deal to attend.
"Leave your placards outside if you are genuinely interested in a conversation; if you have fears and concerns come and sit around the table and discuss them," he said.
New Zealand has not yet ratified the TPP deal despite signing it last month, and 16 roadshows have been planned across the country to attempt to garner public support for the trade agreement.
