A customer at McDonald's in Japan was shocked to discover a piece of vinyl lodged in their chicken nugget.
The fast food giant has recently been under fire following allegations one of its Chinese food suppliers was mixing out-of-date meat with fresh product.
But, the chicken nugget incident is far from an isolated case and there are been many fast food horror stories in the past.
1. Finger-lickin' good?
Perhaps the most shocking case was a young boy who found a severed fingertip in his sandwich.
Ryan Hart was 14 when he discovered the appendage at an Arby's in Michigan in 2012, the Huffington Post reports.
After he bit into his after school meal he felt something rubbery, which turned out to be the severed finger of an unfortunate employee.
The worker had left the restaurant after chopping around 3cm off her finger with a meat slicer. Her fellow employees claimed they were unaware of the accident and continued to serve customers.
2. Burger comes with special sauce
Burger King in New Zealand was criticised after an Auckland woman was served a burger wrapped in blood stained packaging.
In 2010, Rachel Hughley and her husband Tim were shocked when she discovered blood from the wrapper had soaked into the bottom of the bun.
After checking the blood had not come from their own hands they concluded it had come from an employee.
The employee at the west Auckland restaurant had cut his hand while preparing the food and didn't notice he was bleeding.
3. Whopper shocker
Years earlier, in 2007, Burger King came under fire in the US after a customer found an unwrapped condom in his Whopper.
Van Miguel Hartless found himself chewing on the contraceptive after ordering the fast food chain's signature burger in Vermont, the Associated Press reports.
Hartless took Burger King to court claiming he suffered sustained pain, suffering, distress, vomiting and nightmares following the incident.
Burger King filed a counterclaim alleging the condom was placed in the burger outside of the restaurant. The case was eventually settled outside of court.
4. Big Mac? More like Big Maggot
In 2009, a Northland teenager claimed his Big Mac from McDonald's was infested with maggots.
Isaac Tansley alleged he discovered the bugs worming around on the meat patty when he lifted the bun to remove the gherkins, after visiting a Whangarei restaurant.
He complained to McDonald's, who claimed it was unlikely the burger had contained maggots when it left the restaurant as the patties were frozen and made to order.
5. Carl's Jr burger a little too hearty
Following on from the burger theme, an Auckland man was disgusted when he found large artery in his Memphis BBQ burger from Carl's Jr.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, allegedly pulled the rubbery artery out of his mouth after taking a bite of his meal in 2013, the New Zealand Herald reports.
A friend of the unfortunate diner posted a picture of the animal artery on the restaurant's Facebook page. The restaurant said they would investigate the incident.
6. Glass half-full of burger
A New York police officer was badly injured after chomping on a burger filled with shards of glass in 2011 (Photo: NYPD).
Officer John Florio suffered cuts to his throat and mouth after eating a Big Mac, the New York Times reports.
An 18-year-old employee initially confessed to putting the glass in the burger as a joke and claimed he didn't know it was going to be sold to a policeman.
The officer sued McDonald's for US$5.5 million and the employee was charged with assaulting the police officer.
The employee was acquitted of the charges and last year won $437,000 in a settlement with the city.
7. Pie tastes like cardboard, with good reason
An Auckland man and his father got more than they bargained for last year when the father discovered a piece of cardboard in his McDonald's Georgie Pie.
The man took the pie up to the counter where he said it was snatched from his hands.
Staff blamed suppliers and refused to give the man a replacement pie.
8. Mice and Cheese pie
In 2007, Dunedin man John Rutherford got a nasty surprise when he found a mouse in his steak and cheese pie.
Mr Rutherford says he had already polished off one pie and was starting on another, when he noticed what appeared to be a tail poking out from the meat.
The Irvines pie, purchased in the frozen section of a Countdown supermarket, was tested to determine if it contained mouse or mince.
9. Not-so-happy meal
In 2013, a family in Michigan was surprised to find a pipe stuffed with marijuana inside a Burger King kids' meal box purchased for a boy by his grandfather.
Following a police investigation, a 23-year-old employee admitted to placing the pipe inside the box – in an attempt to hide his weed while he was working.
The employee, along with two friends who did not work at Burger King, were arrested and charged in relation to the incident.
The boy was not harmed.
10. McDonald's… gives you wings?
(LinkBoyJT/Reddit)
A Reddit user posted an image of what appeared to be a deep-fried insect on the online forum in 2012.
The man had ordered a hash brown from McDonald's and felt something at the bottom of the bag. Upon closer inspection, he discovered what appeared to be a battered and fried cockroach or moth.
The man said he took the toasted bug to the manager who gave him a free meal for his next visit, but he claimed she didn't seem all that concerned.
