It sounds like something out Donnie Darko - a plane engine falling from the sky, with no apparent source.

The Myanmar Times reports just such a thing happened on Thursday above a remote mountainous area of the southeast Asian country.

"Initially, we thought it was a battle," villager Daw Ma Kyi told The Myanmar Times, which called it a UFO - unidentified falling object.

"The explosion made our houses shake. We saw the smoke from our village," said Daw Ma Kyi.

"I do not know exactly what it is, because I am not a specialist," village leader U Hla Aung told the paper.

The object is about 3.7m long and 1.5m wide. While it looks like a plane engine, officials from the government told the Times they don't know what it is.

Looking at a photo of it posted on Facebook, one official said it looked more like a rocket booster than a jet engine.

"Experts are there checking it," said Kachin State government deputy director U Zaw Myo Nyunt.
