Police say they are not pursuing any other suspects in the ongoing, unsolved murder of Scott Guy after the man they charged with his murder was acquitted.
Detective inspector Sue Schwalger, who headed the investigation, gave a brief statement outside the High Court in Wellington where Ewen Macdonald was found not guilty for killing brother-in-law Scott Guy.
Mr Guy was shot at the end of his driveway on July 8, 2010 with a number of shots to the neck and face. Distinctive bootprints littered the scene and three puppies from a nearby shed were missing.
The news shocked the nation and police had very few leads on why this farmer and young father had been gunned down. It was labelled an ultimate ‘whodunit’.
But nine months later, in an unexpected twist, Mr Macdonald - Mr Guy’s brother-in-law and business partner - was arrested and charged with his murder.
He also admitted to being responsible to burning down a farm house on Scott and Kylee’s property, vandalising their new house and stealing two prized deer from a neighbouring property.
He has always denied having anything to do with the murder but the Crown argued he was lying and did it because he silently fermented and stewed at Mr Guy's increasing permanence on the farm.
They said the bootprints were from a pair of his dive boots and he stole and murdered the puppies to make the death look like a botched robbery.
Yesterday, his month-long murder trial came to an end with the jury coming back with a not guilty verdict.
Ms Schwalger says although she accepts the decision of the jury, all evidence in their investigation led them to Ewen Macdonald.
“All evidence led to the prosecution, we put that evidence in front of the jury and the jury have made that decision,” she says.
Ms Schwalger says it is still an ongoing investigation but they were not after anyone else in relation to the murder.
“I would like to make it clear that if any new evidence comes to light, police will investigate it with the same vigour as they have throughout this inquiry.
“Police are currently not pursuing anyyone else in relation to this investigation nor are there any other avenues of inquiry,” she told reporters.
