Fashion Week has brought out the inner fashionista in perhaps a very unlikely candidate.

During an Ask Me Anything session as part of 3news.co.nz's Decision 14 coverage, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters was complimented on his dress sense and asked what his favourite menswear store was.

And the 69-year-old, who denies spending much at all on clothing, has some sound advice for fashion victims: "The key thing, just as a hint, when it comes to clothing, you must know your colours."

"You're either a winter, or a spring, or a summer or an autumn. If you know your colours, then you'll buy much more wisely and won't get home and after a month and say, 'Why on Earth did I buy that? It doesn't suit me.' Because often it looks great on someone else, and you think it looks good on you but they've got a different colour scheme or colour range that suits them compared with you."

And Peters encourages keen shoppers to be thrifty.

"If you can, be patient. Don't buy it when you first see it; if you still like it a week later then maybe think about it. That way you keep the cost down and also know the colours to match.

"If you haven't got a flair, I bet your mother or your sister has or someone in your family and they can seriously help you."
