Madonna has been banned from a cult Texas cinema chain after she was reportedly caught texting during a New York screening of Steve McQueen's tense new drama 12 Years A Slave.

Bosses at the Alamo Drafthouse cinemas have a strict policy against the use of cellphones and they have told the pop superstar she is not welcome at their theatres until she apologises.

Madonna was allegedly scolded for texting during the movie's New York Film Festival screening last week.

Film critic Charles Taylor went public with the story, suggesting Madonna was the "mysterious blonde in black lace gloves who wouldn't stop texting on her Blackberry throughout the first half of the movie".

He added, "Eventually, a woman next to me tapped her on the shoulder and told her to put her phone away, and the blonde hissed back, 'It's for business... ENSLAVER!' I turned to the shoulder tapper and loudly said, 'THANKS!' and gave her a thumbs up. The rest of the movie, I kept thinking about how I wanted to tell the blonde what a disgrace she was.

"During the standing ovation, the blonde ducked out... J. Alexander (actor Jason Alexander) asked, 'Who was that?' Jason then looked down at the floor. His eyes got wide, and he picked up an envelope and showed it to us... And it said: '2 screening tix (sic) MADONNA.'

"Sure enough, we looked to the side of the theater and standing against the wall in black lace gloves was Madonna. The worst person in America."

After hearing about the story, the Alamo's CEO Tim League took to Twitter to ban Madonna from his theatres, writing, "Until she apologizes to movie fans, Madonna is banned from watching movies @drafthouse."

The theatre chain has a strict no-talking and no-texting policy and staff have been known to eject patrons who violate it.
