Aussie-born Ashby joined Emirates Team NZ in 2010 as a wing trimmer for the unsuccessful San Francisco campaign, before moving to skipper for their successful 2017 crusade at Bermuda.
The man they call 'Mr Multihull', with 17 world championships to his name and an Olympic silver medal in the Tornado class, has been crucial in the fortunes of Team NZ over the last decade.
As skipper, Ashby is responsible for the sailing programme and the race boat when it's on the water, while also controlling the speed of Te Rehutai.
In 2019 New Years honours, Ashby was appointed a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sailing.
