Basketball has featured at only two previous editions of the Commonwealth Games - Melbourne 2006 and Gold Coast 2018 - but will switch to the shortened 3x3 format at Birmingham.
While among the world's most-played sports, basketball is not traditionally strong in the Commonwealth.
Australia have dominated Games competition, twice winning men's and women's gold on home soil, with New Zealand capturing two silvers at Melbourne and bronzes at Gold Coast.
That trend will likely continue, although the reduced format will allow other nations to field more competitive teams, increasing the possibility of upsets.
Australia did not field teams at the recent 3x3 World Cup tournament, where the NZ men finished 10th, but the women (15th) trailled behind third-placed Canada among Commonwealth countries.
