Birmingham Commonwealth Games: Cycling

  • 01/01/2022

Cycling has been part of the Commonwealth Games since London 1934, with Australia becoming the dominant nation over the past 40 years.

The sport is divided into three disciplines - road, track and mountain bike, which was introduced at Manchester 2002.

Ranking behind the Aussies and England for medals, New Zealand has enjoyed a strong history in the sport, with 112 medals and 25 gold - our second-most, behind only athletics.

Our six gold, three silver and three bronze at Auckland 1990 was the only time since 1978 that Australia did not dominate cycling medals.

Gary Anderson became on of our most prolific Commonwealth medallists at Auckland, winning the individual pursuit and 10-mile scratch race, sharing in the team pursuit triumph and claiming silver in the kilo time trial. Four years earlier, Anderson also won two silver (kilo & team pursuit) and two bronze (scratch race & individual pursuit)

While cycling's high performance programme has undergone intense scrutiny in recent years - particularly after Olivia Podmore's suicide last year - it is again expected to produce a swag more medals for New Zealand at Birmingham, with Tokyo Olympic silver medallists Ellesse Andrews (keirin) and Campbell Stewart (omnium).
