Gaze and teammate Anton Cooper have achieved an NZ one-finish at the last two Commonwealth Games, with the former taking honours in controversial circumstances four years ago.
Gaze is a two-time former world U23 champion, with four UCI World Cup victories to his credit, including cross-country at Albstadt in May.
He finished behind Cooper at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, but reversed the finishing order at Gold Coast, where Gaze accused his rival of taking advantage of a puncture to race ahead, eventually pulling him back within sight of the finish for victory.
He also contest the cycling road race at Gold Coast and has two national criterium titles to his name, but will restrict himself to the terrain at Birmingham.
