A double-breasted pinstriped suit jacket worn by Ringo Starr in The Beatles movie Help! has gone under the hammer for more than US$46,500 (NZ$70,700).

The jacket, made from black wool, was snapped up by "a top rock 'n' roll collector in Rhode Island" as the online Marvels of Modern Music sale closed on Thursday, according to bosses at RR Auction in Boston, Massachusetts.

The news emerges 50 years after Starr modelled the item in the 1965 musical comedy.

Other top items in the RR Auction event include a letter written by tragic The Doors star Jim Morrison, which sold for more than US$23,000 (NZ$35,000), a custom-made Hamer guitar belonging to Johnny Ramone, which was purchased for just under US$50,000 (NZ$76,000), and a signed copy of the Jimi Hendrix Experience album, which sold for almost US$31,000 (NZ$47,100).
