Alexander Wang will be leaving the house of Balenciaga as creative director, a position he took nearly three years ago.

The American designer was hired in December 2012 to replace Frenchman Nicolas Ghesquière, who turned the Parisian couture label into a critically acclaimed fashion house in his 15 years as creative director.

According to WWD, the fashion house's mother company Kering has decided not to renew Wang's contract and the spring/summer 2016 collection shown at Paris Fashion Week in October for Balenciaga will be his last.

Wang is considered one of America's most successful designers of his generation.

The young designer launched his own label in 2007 when he was just 23. Today, he is included in the Times 100 Most Influential People of 2015 and is frequently seen with celebrities such as Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

Kering has kept its search for a successor under wraps, but rumours suggest it is not looking for another high profile designer.
