Photographs of the shotgun Kurt Cobain purportedly used to kill himself have been released by Seattle Police Department officials.
The Nirvana frontman was found dead at his home in Seattle, Washington in April,1994, aged 27. Coroners subsequently ruled the singer shot himself three days before his body was discovered and ruled the death a suicide.
Pictures of the Remington shotgun Cobain apparently used to kill himself were posted to the Seattle Police Department website this week. The five photographs show Seattle police cold case Detective Mike Ciesynski holding the gun at different angles.
According to CBSnews.com, officials have released the pictures publicly for the first time in response to their public records act request.
On the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death in 2014, Ciesynski reviewed the file and developed rolls of crime scene film. The grainy photographs, including images showing a box filled with syringes and a tainted spoon, a lighter, and cigarette packet, were uploaded to the police department website that year.
That same year Ciesynski also explained he hoped the findings would dispel long-running conspiracy theories surrounding Cobain's death. He said, "Sometimes people believe what they read - some of the disinformation from some of the books, that this was a conspiracy. That's completely inaccurate. It's a suicide. This is a closed case."
Conspiracy theorist Richard Lee, who fronted his own public access TV show Kurt Cobain Was Murdered, sued the police department in 2014 to get graphic crime scene photos released, but Cobain's widow Courtney Love and daughter Frances Cobain asked a judge to keep them sealed. Lee's case was dismissed in August, 2015.
