Taika Waititi's latest film Hunt for the Wilderpeople has broken another record today, becoming the highest grossing Kiwi film after a week.
The movie has already earned $1,745,090 since it premiered last Wednesday, eclipsing the previous record-holder, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? by just over $500,000.
On Monday it was revealed that Hunt for the Wilderpeople had broken the record for the highest grossing New Zealand film over an opening weekend, pulling in a massive $1.3 million in its first three days.
Director Taika Waititi was suitably thrilled with the result.
"If I were American I'd be doing a fist-pump and screaming 'We're number one! We're number one!'," he said.
"But I'm a Kiwi so I'll pretend it's not really a big deal and just stand around looking embarrassed by the achievement.
"Ah screw it, I'll allow myself one fist-pump."
Waititi is about to embark on his biggest project yet when he steps up to direct the latest instalment of Marvel'sThor franchise.
