The rumours are true -- HBO's comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, starring Seinfeld creator Larry David, is returning for a ninth season.

When asked why he decided to come back, David said: "In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, 'I left, I did nothing, I returned.'"

"We're thrilled that Larry has decided to do a new season of Curb and can't wait to see what he has planned," HBO's programming president Casey Bloys says.

It's pretty, pretty good news for fans of the sitcom, which revolves around awkward situations in David's everyday life, and his vexatious responses to them.

The last episode of season eight finished with David fleeing to Paris from New York to avoid his neighbour Michael J Fox. There's no indication yet how the new season will pick up the story.

Rumours were fuelled by an interview in early June on The Rich Eisen Show with actor JB Smoove.

Smoove, who plays David's friend Leon Black on the show, said he talks to David every two weeks just to check in. And recently David brought up the idea of possibly starting a ninth season.

"About a month ago he throws out this little 'ehhhh, I'm thinking about coming back'."

David apparently asked Smoove: "If I do come back, would you be available?"

Smoove said: "'You know something Larry, I'll be available. Just call, give me early notice, and I'll be there.' I'll move anything to the side for Curb Your Enthusiasm, which would be a fabulous thing to do. Season nine would be fabulous."
