Tributes have flown in for RnB artist Aalliyah from a swathe of high-profile musicians and celebrities, marking 15 years since she was killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas.

Close friend Missy Elliott led the homages, saying the singer had inspired many and will never be forgotten.

Beyoncé also posted on social media in honour of Aaliyah, harking back to a red carpet interview the two shared at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards in which the pair shared their love for D'Angelo.

RnB singer Usher said her legacy "lives on through the admiration and celebration of who she is", before adding that any female artist who sings and dances now "has a bit of Aaliyah in her".

Fellow New York-based artist Nas called her "one of a kind", while long-time collaborator and producer Timbaland also jumped on social media to share a picture of her.

Aaliyah died when a plane she was on crashed and exploded while leaving the Bahamas in 2001. Investigations found that the pilot, Luis Morales, had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system.

Her family later settled a wrongful death lawsuit out of court with Morales' employer, Blackhawk International Airways.
