Simba, Mufasa, Scar and Zazu are coming back to the big screen - Disney has confirmed a live action remake of The Lion King is in the works.

The "reimagining" of the 1994 animated classic will be helmed by Jon Favreau, who recently directed Disney hit The Jungle Book, released in April.

It also follows a series of live action adaptations of Disney titles including Maleficent, Cinderella and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast, set for release in 2017.

And they seem to have cracked the winning formula, with The Jungle Book taking in US$965 million worldwide. A sequel is now also in the works, but no release date has been set.

It'll be a trip down memory lane for most viewers, with the new version including songs from the original animated film.

Disney didn't release any more details, with no decision made on when the film will be in cinemas.

The Academy Award-winning film is still one of the biggest animated hits of all time, taking in US$968 million (US$1.5 billion in 2016 dollars).

It's also been turned into a successful Broadway show which has played across the world.
