Disney has released the first official full-length trailer for its upcoming animated film Moana, which reveals new details about the film's plot.
The trailer begins with a voice saying: "For generations this peaceful island has been home to our family. But beyond our reef, a great danger is coming."
It's from here that Moana (Auli'I Cravalho) sets out to find the demigod Maui (Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson).
Together they go on a journey, which legend has decreed will "save us all".
It's not entirely clear what danger Moana's island is facing, although it clearly involves lava monsters and savage coconut pirates.
Moana shows off her power to tame water, Maui continues to display a lovable cockiness, and - speaking of cocks - Moana's pet chicken establishes himself as a bit of a, erm, chicken.
Moana is Disney's first film that features a Pacific princess and that's not where the Kiwi connection ends - Flight of the Conchords' Jermaine Clement and Hunt for the Wilderpeople's Rachel House feature in the cast, and Kiwi director Taika Waititi had a hand in writing the film.
It features music by Opetaia Foa'i of New Zealand group Te Vaka, Broadway composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mark Mancina.
The film opens in the United States on November 23, but the New Zealand release date is not until December 26.
Moana is directed by the team behind The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, Ron Clements and John Musker.
