The latest home showcased on Grand Designs NZ was Guy Marriage and his cousins' Kapiti coastline home on stilts.
With predicted rising sea levels, the Wellington coastline is in danger of eventually being washed away.
But that didn't stop Marriage and his cousins from building an experimental home just three metres from the high tide mark.
An architectural lecturer who wanted to prove to himself that those who teach also can do, Marriage had to constantly clear his site of storm detritus, but ended up with a truly marvelous home.
"What an amazing achievement," exclaimed host Chris Moller on seeing the completed home.
"I love the wharf, I love the flag, your wonderful deck, these lovely stairs coming down. It's like celebrating the classic Kiwi dream."
