Video has been published online of a bizarre real-life 'shrine' based on scenes in horror movie Blair Witch.

Hiker James Rankin shot video of wanted posters and strange stick arrangements while walking through Berkeley Jackson County Park in Huntington, New York.

Disturbed by his discovery, Mr Rankin says he contacted police, who told him the stunt was pulled by the park's neighbour.

"The police have told me that the homeowner of the adjacent property is claiming this was set up for a Halloween party and that it would be taken down after Halloween. They are not investigating further," says Mr Rankin in an online video.

Adam Wingard's Blair Witch was released last month and has so far pulled in US$30 million at the global box office.

It has a review ranking of 47 percent on aggregator metacritic.com - better than prior sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (15), but poorer than the original Blair Witch Project (81).
