Sci-fi action Starship Troopers is getting a reboot at Columbia Pictures, with writing duties being handed to the same guys who did the Baywatch and Friday the 13th reboots.

The original Paul Verhoeven adaptation of the Robert A Heinlein novel wasn't a huge commercial or critical success upon release in 1997, but later developed a passionate cult following.

It's already spawned three widely derided sequels and an animated series spinoff; however, the new film won't be a remake or a sequel, but rather an "all-new take" on the Heinlein novel.

Neal H Moritz will produce the new Starship Troopers with Toby Jaffe, with whom he worked on the 2012 remake of another Verhoeven film, Total Recall.

Writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon also have 2003's Freddy vs. Jason to their name.

The average Rotten Tomatoes rating of Freddy vs. Jason, the 2012 Total Recall and the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th is a lowly 32 percent, which hopefully means the creative team behind the new Starship Troopers will be out to prove they can do better this time.
