A collective of New Zealand's film critics have voted on the best films of 2016, with American crime drama Hell or High Water coming out on top.
Kiwi films Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Tickled made the list, at the third and ninth spots, respectively.
The poll included reviewers from Newshub, Flicks, NZ Herald, Stuff, the Spinoff, the Listener, Radio NZ, Newstalk ZB, the Sunday Star-Times and the Dominion Post.
Steve Newall, editor of Flicks, believes it's the first time such a cross-publication list has been put together in New Zealand.
"The US and the UK have similar collectives, but they're also quite 'highbrow' and 'serious'," says Newall.
"With so much media competition and conglomeration here - plus overstretched newsrooms - I think most outlets are generally focused on getting out their own content at this time of year. That's one of the things that makes this list different, and a satisfying thing to have put together."
Although Hell or High Water topped the poll, it didn't actually top many of the contributing reviewers' lists.
"That's the way these collective things go. My number one film of the year was The Handmaiden, for instance, which didn't even figure," says Newall.
"I expected Hunt for the Wilderpeople to come out on top, and while I genuinely love that film, it's nice to see something unexpected top the poll. Hopefully the public can use this top ten as a bit of a summer viewing list."
