Mariah Carey will be happy to say goodbye to 2016 after an awkward New Year's Eve performance in New York's Times Square marred by technical difficulties and lip-syncing.
The show seemed to start well as the pop star kicked off with the traditional New Year tune 'Auld Lang Syne'.
But when the music for her hit song 'Emotions' began, she stood with hand on hip and said: "Happy New Year, we can't hear... We didn't have a [sound] check for this so we'll just sing."
While her dancers moved behind her, Carey paced the stage, making the odd comment to the crowd. It appeared she couldn't hear the backing track when she said: "Get these monitors on please... I'm trying to be a good sport here."
Problems continued with the next song 'We Belong Together', when she moved her microphone away while a prerecording of the song played on - showing she was lip-syncing.
"It just doesn't get any better," she said, before leaving the stage.
Afterwards Carey tweeted an image of her shrugging, saying: "Shit happens. Have a happy and healthy new year everybody! Here's to making more headlines in 2017."
Hundreds of thousands of people were in Times Square for the event, which was broadcast across the United States.
