Budweiser trolls Trump with pro-immigration Super Bowl advert

American beer stalwart Budweiser has released a powerful Super Bowl advert telling the story of its immigrant co-founder, who migrated to the United States to pursue his dream.

Set in the 1800s, the advert 'Born the Hard Way' tracks the inventor's journey by ship from Germany to the States, and being taunted with "go back home!" upon his arrival.

But he pushes on with his ambitions and viewers see the beginnings of the liquor empire when he reveals a glimpse of a Budweiser in his sketchbook.

Its release comes amidst opposition to President Donald Trump's executive order that restricts entry to  the US for some Muslim-majority nations.

A Budweiser spokesperson told Ad Week that the ad is not intended to convey a political message, but "is a universal story that is very relevant today".

Super Bowl advert slots are highly coveted and hugely expensive, and this year's game between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons is expected to be watched by over 100 million people.

Lady Gaga, an outspoken Trump critic, will perform at the half-time show, and anti-Trump protests are expected outside the Houston stadium.
