Sir Peter Jackson snaps up Wellington family business

A garden centre in Miramar, run by the same family for almost 40 years, has been sold to movie giant Sir Peter Jackson.

California Garden Centre manager Barry Lowe said they could soon be replaced by production crews filming stars for Sir Peter's next movie.

Mr Lowe's parents opened the business in 1974 and since then it's always been a family affair. His uncles, an aunt, brother, three sisters, a sister-in-law and even nieces and nephews have all worked at the store  at various times.

But this month, he's shutting up shop for the last time after Sir Peter bought the huge 9000-square metre property centred around an old oil silo.

Sir Peter has interests in several businesses in the Miramar area including at Park Road Post Production, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop.

A spokesman for Wingnut Films confirmed the purchase, but said no decision had been made as to what it would be used for. However, they confirmed Sir Peter wasn't considering a career change and wouldn't be working at the centre himself.

Mr Lowe wouldn't comment on how much he sold the centre for.

Janice Campbell has been a customer and the garden centre since it opened, and she's excited that Sir Peter has bought the place.

"Good on Peter Jackson for investing locally. He'll have fun here in the tank. Who knows what it's going to be," Ms Campbell said.
