Trump party loses star singer Jennifer Holliday

Donald Trump's inauguration party, already short on big names, just lost one of its biggest.

Broadway star Jennifer Holliday, who sang for former Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and both the George Bushes, has pulled out.

In an open letter, the Dreamgirls star said her gay fans made her realise she'd made a mistake in agreeing to sing for the controversial President-elect.

"I sincerely apologise for my lapse of judgment, for being uneducated on the issues that affect every American at this crucial time in history and for causing such dismay and heartbreak to my fans," she wrote.

"Please know that I HEAR YOU and I feel your pain. The LGBT Community was mostly responsible for birthing my career and I am deeply indebted to you… You have loved me faithfully and unconditionally and for so many years you provided me with work even though my star had long since faded [sic]."

Holliday initially defended the decision to perform, telling the New York Times she wasn't political and didn't have a "dog in the fight".

"It brought a lot of threats from people already saying I'll never work again… I know everybody hates me now, but that shows we are all just hateful people now - we don't even want to work together."

Holliday voted for Mr Trump's rival, Hillary Clinton.

On Saturday (NZ time) it was revealed the inauguration line-up would be headlined by country star Toby Keith and veteran rockers 3 Doors Down.

Among those who've reportedly turned down the gig are Charlotte Church, Kiss, Moby, Elton John and Celine Dion.
